We interact economically, politically with China, but on the basis of a set of clear, shared values and principles. IPAC meeting starts tomorrow

As I have announced, I am in Washington DC participating in the annual Summit of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (ipac.global) as co-chair of the Romanian chapter.

It is a crucial moment for the future. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it has become increasingly clear that authoritarian tendencies of state players of global importance must be countered. That we must not accept exceptions when it comes to human rights, environmental protection, labor standards and the elimination of forced labor, the protection of property, respect for the socio-cultural identity of all communities.

IPAC brings together 25 countries with a common goal. Mai exact, cele 25 de state înțeleg că vom interacționa economic și politic cu China, dar că trebuie să facem acest lucru în baza unui set de principii și valori clare, comune. Vorbim despre:

- democratic values;
- human rights and the declaration on human rights - which China has also signed;
- environmental protection;
- protection of private property;
- the right to work;
- substantial protection at work.

We therefore need to engage with the People's Republic of China to address some of the world's most pressing issues, such as climate change. But at the same time we need to clearly define this set of principles which are non-negotiable.

And to act coherently, as a simphony of liberal democracies.
